Friuli Venezia Giulia has emerged as one of Italy’s strongest-performing tourism destinations, ranking fifth nationwide for tourist accommodation occupancy, according to data released Sunday by Italy’s Ministry of Tourism.

The northeastern region recorded an occupancy rate of 53.7 percent through online travel agencies, exceeding the national average and outperforming several of Italy’s best-known tourism destinations, including Tuscany and Sicily. The figures also place Italy ahead of other major European tourism markets, with Spain reporting an occupancy rate of 42.8 percent and France 32.9 percent.

Regional officials attributed the result to a long-term strategy focused on expanding tourism beyond the traditional summer season while broadening the region’s appeal.

Since 2019, annual tourist stays in Friuli Venezia Giulia have increased by more than two million, according to regional authorities. Regional Councilor for Productive Activities and Tourism Sergio Emidio Bini said the growth reflects years of investment carried out in partnership with local tourism operators and trade associations.

The region has emphasized destination marketing, major cultural and sporting events, and the promotion of a wider range of attractions, including mountain destinations, outdoor recreation and slow tourism. Officials say these efforts have helped distribute visitor flows more evenly throughout the year and encourage longer stays.

Improved air connectivity has also played a role in attracting international visitors. The expansion of routes at Trieste Airport has increased direct links with European destinations, making the region more accessible to foreign travelers.

Regional authorities also point to the new Tourism and Commerce Code, which is expected to become fully operational during 2026 following the adoption of implementing regulations. The legislation is intended to simplify administrative procedures for tourism businesses, improve accommodation standards and strengthen the competitiveness of the region’s tourism sector.

The latest figures underscore the growing role of Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy’s tourism industry as the region continues efforts to attract visitors year-round while expanding its international profile.
