On June 13, the Civic Museum of the Sea will host Un mare di Bora (“A Sea of Bora”), a guided tour that explores the city’s maritime history through the lens of the powerful wind that has shaped life along the Adriatic coast for centuries.

The event, scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the museum’s North Wing in Magazzino 26, is free and open to the public. Leading the tour is Sabina Viezzoli, known locally as “The Bora Guide,” whose work focuses on interpreting Trieste’s relationship with its most famous meteorological phenomenon.

Moving through exhibits dedicated to navigation and port life, participants will encounter nautical instruments, ship models and maritime artifacts that illustrate the region’s long connection to the sea. Rather than following a conventional historical narrative, the tour places the wind at the center of the story, examining how it influenced navigation, trade routes and daily life in one of the Adriatic’s most important ports.

The Bora, a cold and often intense northeasterly wind, has long been both a challenge and a defining characteristic of Trieste. Its gusts have tested sailors approaching the harbor while helping shape the city’s identity and reputation far beyond Italy’s northeastern border.

Organizers say the tour aims to highlight the relationship between natural forces and human activity, offering visitors a different perspective on the development of the port and the communities that depended on it.

The initiative is part of the second edition of FLORA, a project promoted by Ecothema and funded by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia through a grant awarded in October 2025.
