At Villa Manin, “Sapori Pro Loco” Celebrates the Flavors of Friuli Venezia Giulia

At the sprawling 18th-century estate of Villa Manin, one of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s most anticipated culinary gatherings returned this weekend, drawing together dozens of local associations, food producers and volunteers from across the region.

Now in its 23rd edition, “Sapori Pro Loco” has become a showcase for the culinary identity of northeastern Italy, bringing regional specialties, wines and traditions to the historic grounds of Villa Manin over two weekends in May.

The event, which opened on May 16, features 66 traditional dishes prepared by Pro Loco associations — local volunteer organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting community heritage. The festival continues on May 16–17 and May 22–24, with tastings, concerts, cultural programs, guided tours and activities for families scheduled throughout the estate.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Friday, Sergio Emidio Bini described the festival as one of the region’s most representative events, emphasizing its grassroots origins and the role of volunteers in sustaining local traditions.

Held beneath the arcaded exedras of the former dogal complex, the festival highlights both long-standing recipes and modern reinterpretations of regional cuisine, accompanied by wines and craft beers produced throughout Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Organizers say the event has grown into a strategic platform for promoting the region’s cultural and gastronomic heritage, attracting visitors from across northern Italy and neighboring countries.

At the center of the program is the “Io sono Friuli Venezia Giulia” area, developed with support from the regional government and PromoTurismoFVG. The space serves as a meeting point for visitors, producers and tourism operators, hosting talks, tastings and presentations focused on local traditions and regional products.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Friday morning inside the exhibition area, formally opening a festival that has become both a celebration of local cuisine and a tribute to the volunteer networks that help sustain community life across Friuli Venezia Giulia.
