At Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi, a new one-act adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata will run from May 8 to 23, 2026, offering a condensed and educational reworking of the opera aimed at students, families and first-time audiences.

Titled La Storia della Traviata, the production reduces the original score to a chamber format and reframes the narrative through Annina, Violetta’s maid, who serves as both character and narrator. The adaptation is designed as part of the theater’s long-standing “Opere in un Atto” series, which presents simplified versions of major operatic works for broader accessibility.

Stage direction, dramaturgy, set and costume design are by Andrea Stanisci, who shapes the story around Annina’s perspective as a witness to Violetta’s life and decline. The musical reduction is by Emanuele Stracchi, who reorchestrated Verdi’s score for a smaller ensemble, emphasizing vocal clarity and reducing orchestral and choral forces.

The cast includes alternating performances of Violetta by Yulia Merkudinova and Anna Graf, with Brayan Avila Martinez and Kristian Marušić as Alfredo Germont. Giorgio Germont will be performed by Jure Počkaj and Gangsoon Kim. Daniela Gattorno appears as Annina and narrator.

The production will be performed primarily in morning time slots, with additional afternoon and one evening performance. Tickets are priced at €10, with reduced admission for students and audiences under 18.

The initiative continues the Verdi Theater’s effort to reinterpret major works of the operatic canon in more accessible formats while maintaining their musical and dramatic essence.
