In Piazza della Borsa, Trieste’s Civil Protection volunteers inaugurated a new stand dedicated to explaining how the city’s weather alert system and emergency areas operate. The initiative, presented during the Barcolana, highlights the essential work of Civil Protection — from managing local emergencies to assisting in national and international crises.
Trieste’s municipal Civil Protection team includes 43 volunteers, aged between 20 and 73, who provide their time and expertise entirely on a voluntary basis. Their work covers both immediate response to emergencies — such as floods, storms, and the strong bora winds — and preventive measures, including public education and community training.
Councillor Caterina de Gavardo, who oversees citizen safety, praised the volunteers’ professionalism and dedication. She emphasized that Civil Protection’s mission extends beyond intervention to raising awareness: helping citizens understand weather alerts, recognize potential risks, and know how to act in emergencies.
The new stand offers practical guidance on reading Civil Protection bulletins, identifying safe gathering points, and understanding Trieste’s updated Municipal Emergency Plan — key tools for building a more resilient and prepared community.
