On Friday, September 12, at 12 p.m., residents of Trieste are invited to gather in Corso Italia 13 to read the names of journalists who have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

According to local press organizations, 246 journalists have died in the region, with reports indicating that media workers were targeted from the outset of the conflict. International journalists are currently restricted from entering Gaza, raising concerns about the ability to document ongoing events. Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, director of The Voice of Hind Rajab, recently described the situation as “a war against the truth.”

The event is organized by Articolo 21, Assostampa, and the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional chapter of the Order of Journalists. Participants will gather under a plaque honoring journalists Marco Luchetta, Alessandro Saša Ota, Dario D’Angelo, and Miran Hrovatin. The organizers said the reading aims to honor the memory of the deceased, assert that reporting is not a crime, and call for the entry of an independent commission led by the European journalists’ union to Gaza.

The gathering will also highlight the ongoing “Raise Your Voice for Gaza” campaign, a fundraising initiative to support Palestinian journalists.
