British singer Sarah Jane Morris, known for her genre-crossing style and remarkable four-octave vocal range, will open the Italian leg of her current tour in Trieste on Saturday night. The performance, part of the 19th edition of the TriesteLovesJazz International Festival, will take place in Piazza Verdi at 9 p.m. tonight and is free to the public.

Morris rose to international prominence with a sound that blends soul, jazz, blues, and rock, earning comparisons to iconic vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. She herself describes her style as “Nina Simone meets Janis Joplin,” underscoring both the emotional depth and raw power of her performances.

The artist has long enjoyed a close relationship with Italy. Since her debut at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1991—where she performed in duet with Italian singer-songwriter Riccardo Cocciante—she has maintained a loyal following in the country. Over the years, she has collaborated with several Italian musicians, including soul artist Mario Biondi, and toured extensively throughout the peninsula.

In Trieste, Morris will be joined on stage by Tony Remy and Marcus Bonfanti on guitars, Anders Olinder on piano and keyboards, Henry Thomas on bass, and Martyn Barker on drums.

The TriesteLovesJazz International Festival, now in its 19th year, is promoted by the Municipality of Trieste as part of the broader TriesteEstate summer program. The event is organized by the local music organization Casa della Musica/Scuola di Musica 55, and annually brings international jazz artists to the city’s historic squares and cultural venues.

Morris’s performance on Saturday marks not only the start of her Italian dates but also a highlight in a festival known for its diverse and high-caliber lineup. For long-time fans and newcomers alike, it offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Britain’s most distinctive voices in a unique and atmospheric setting.
