Interview: University of Trieste Rector Roberto Di Lenarda

In a symbolic break from academic tradition, the University of Trieste held its Ph.D. Graduation Day on Monday evening in Piazza Verdi, marking the first time the ceremony was staged outside university walls.

Part of the city’s Triestestate cultural program, the open-air event conferred doctoral degrees on the university’s newest researchers and aimed to bring science and scholarship into the public square. The program featured scientific storytelling, music, and the traditional tossing of caps — reimagined as a civic celebration.

University Rector Roberto Di Lenarda, who is nearing the end of his term, addressed the graduates and citizens, underscoring the university’s role in fostering dialogue between academia and the wider community.
