A series of evening guided tours will return to the city’s historic hilltop fortress in June, offering visitors a sunset view of Trieste from the ramparts of the Castello di San Giusto.
Titled “L’ora di storia” (“The Hour of History”), the initiative will take place every Sunday in June, with departures scheduled at 7 p.m. The program follows strong demand in April and May, when the dates sold out quickly.
The one-hour guided walks trace the castle’s walls and bastions, combining panoramic views of the city with historical commentary from museum guides. The routes are designed to highlight Trieste’s development over time, seen from above as the light changes at sunset.
Organizers say the tours are intended for small groups, with advance booking required. Visits will be conducted in Italian and are held entirely outdoors. In case of bad weather, events will be canceled.
At the end of each tour, participants will be able to spend time at the Bastione Rotondo, where an evening bar service will be open for drinks overlooking the city and the Adriatic.
The program is organized by the Municipality of Trieste through the Castle Museum, in collaboration with Midnight / Bar Bastione and Coopculture, which manages educational and outreach activities across the city’s civic museums.
Each Sunday features a different thematic itinerary. On June 7, the tour focuses on Trieste’s historical evolution from Roman times to the present. On June 14, it explores the city’s ancient and medieval heritage, including its Roman remains and the cathedral on San Giusto Hill.
The June 21 edition examines Trieste’s transformation under Habsburg rule, when the city developed as a major imperial port and commercial hub. The final tour on June 28 addresses the 20th century, a period marked by war, shifting borders, and changing identities in what the program describes as a “laboratory of the twentieth century.”
