Trieste will welcome the Italian Junior Road Cycling Championships this weekend, June 21–22, marking a major sporting event for the northeastern Italian city. Local authorities formally presented the event this morning at the historic Salotto Azzurro in Trieste’s City Hall.
The presentation was attended by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, City Sports Councillor Elisa Lodi, Regional Councillor Michele Lobianco, Francesco Seriani, president of SC Cottur—the organizing cycling club—and Sgonico Mayor Monica Hrovatin.
In his remarks, Mayor Dipiazza acknowledged SC Cottur‘s long-standing contributions to the local sporting community. The club, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, has been a fixture in the region’s cycling scene. Dipiazza also noted his personal enthusiasm for cycling, describing it as a lifelong passion.
Councillor Lodi emphasized the significance of hosting a national competition in the city. “It’s a major achievement to bring an event of this scale to Trieste,” she said, highlighting the combination of elite sport with a slate of public activities designed to encourage broad participation and enjoyment.
“This is not just a competition,” Lodi added, “it’s an opportunity to promote sport at every level and to shine a light on our city—especially the Porto Vecchio district, which is undergoing an important transformation under the Porto Vivoredevelopment project.”
In addition to the races themselves, the championship weekend will feature a series of community and promotional events, aimed at engaging both locals and visitors in the world of cycling and physical activity more broadly.
The Italian Junior Championships are expected to draw top youth competitors from across the country, offering a glimpse at the next generation of Italian cycling talent while also putting Trieste on the map as a destination for major sporting events.
