Two foreign tourists, believed to be German, have been filmed swimming down the Grand Canal in Venice, causing outrage in the lagoon city.

The two men were filmed by local resident Augusto Maurandi as they swam in the canal, watched by their relatives, on 3 June.

The men entered the water in the Erbaria area of the Grand Canal and got out at Riva del Vin, swimming under the city’s famed Rialto Bridge along the way.

Maurandi shared his video on social media and it got picked up by the local newspaper (Notizie.it). The police caught up with the two tourists who were walking barefoot, dressed in just their swimming trunks. The men were ordered to get dressed before receiving fines of €450 each for their illegal dip later in the day, according to local media.
