This Friday, November 10th, SISSA’s Aula Magna hosted the opening ceremony of the 2023-24 Academic Year, the 45th since the foundation of the University.

Andrea Romanino, director of SISSA

SISSA’s Director Andrea Romanino welcomed the new students as well as the old ones praising all of the scientists in the room. “The values of our school – dedication and studious rigor – are forever imprinted in all of our students and alumni. Today we decided to play the special emphasis on the open science, the topic in which SISSA pioneered.”

Romanino was followed by Michele Vendruscolo, SISSA alumnus and now professor of Biophysics at the University of Cambridge, with the Lectio Magistralis entitled “Towards a cure for Alzheimer’s disease”. The Lutman prizes were also awarded for the best PhD thesis in Mathematics and for the best Master’s thesis in Science Communication “Franco Prattico”, and the prizes for the best PhD theses in Physics, Neuroscience and the Master’s in High Performance Computing . The event was an opportunity to welcome the new students of the School and to give voice to the representatives of the technical-administrative staff and students.

The Opening Ceremony concluded with the theatrical performance “Parl-IA-moci” in which the generative artificial intelligence program ChatGPT interpreted the famous composer Gustav Mahler, conversing with the actress Diana Höbel in the role of his wife Alma, creator of the project.
