La festa di San Martino or feast St Martin is mired in a local legend that celebrates both the humility and generosity of a saint along with traditionally warm autumnal weather.
L’estate di San Martino which refers to the arrival of the Indian summer, or a blissful time when you are still able to wear short sleeves (during the day) before the true wrath of winter’s cold hits, is happening in Trieste with temperatures high in 15C this Saturday, 11 November.

Legend has it that Saint Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier who was baptized as an adult and became a bishop in a French town. He had cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm, to save him from the cold. At the same time it stopped snowing and summer was back, hence the “summer of St Martin.”

The celebrations this year will include the traditional market and feast in Prosecco.
Our neighboring town of Muggia is also celebrating San Martino from November 11-12 in Piazza Marconi with traditional local products, wine tastings, exhibitions and various activities hosted in the wooden houses.
While the city of Trieste doesn’t have any special events going on, the Indian summer back in town will most likely see many head to the coast.
