A technical failure in Italy’s air traffic control data network disrupted flights nationwide on Friday, forcing authorities to reduce airspace capacity by about 50% and causing cancellations and delays at major airports.
At Trieste Airport in Ronchi dei Legionari, the disruption is affecting connections to Rome and Milan, leaving passengers facing cancellations and lengthy delays. The airport was among those affected as air traffic restrictions spread across the country.
ENAV, Italy’s air navigation service provider, said the malfunction involved the data network supporting air traffic control. The company ruled out a cyberattack and said technicians were working to restore normal operations.
The restrictions were introduced at 6 a.m. as air traffic increased and technical problems persisted. ENAV said contingency systems had allowed flights to operate normally overnight, but reduced capacity was necessary to maintain safety.
Disruptions were also reported at airports in Rome, Milan, Bergamo and other parts of Italy. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updated flight information before traveling to the airport.
