Authorities in Trieste have opened an investigation after an envelope containing a live bullet was delivered to the regional headquarters of the Court of Auditors of Friuli Venezia Giulia on Tuesday.
The envelope, which bore no return address, arrived by regular mail at the court’s offices on Viale Miramare and was addressed generically to the accounting judiciary. It was opened by a senior official, who alerted police after discovering the bullet and later filed a formal complaint.
The investigation has been assigned to the Digos division of the Italian State Police, which handles cases involving political extremism and threats against public institutions.
Officials at the Court of Auditors declined to comment, maintaining strict confidentiality. The regional court is currently overseeing several high-profile cases, including investigations related to the administration of the Port of Trieste and issues surrounding the certification of the 2022–2024 collective labor agreement for regional and local government employees.
The incident drew condemnation from across the political spectrum. Regional President Massimiliano Fedriga described the mailing as an act of intimidation that “cannot be minimized,” while representatives of Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement issued separate statements expressing support for the independence of the Court of Auditors and calling for a firm institutional response.
Police have not announced any suspects or indicated a possible motive.
