A regional lawmaker has called on the Friuli Venezia Giulia government to intervene to secure the future of Bagno Ausonia, one of Trieste’s best-known historic bathing establishments, following recent structural concerns that have led to partial closures.

Francesco Russo, a member of the regional council for Italy’s Democratic Party (PD), said last week that the facility’s deteriorating condition highlights the need for immediate action. His appeal comes after the collapse of one of the site’s piers in 2019 and the recent closure of its sun deck and terrace because of concerns over structural stability.

Bagno Ausonia, owned by the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, has served generations of residents for nearly a century and remains one of the city’s most recognizable public seaside facilities.

In a formal question submitted to the regional government, Russo urged officials to provide financial backing for an existing restoration and rehabilitation project and to coordinate efforts among the institutions involved.

He argued that prolonged delays risk accelerating the deterioration of the landmark, describing it as an important social, cultural and public space that has long been accessible to the wider community.

Russo said restoration plans have already been prepared but lack the funding needed to move forward. He called on the regional administration to commit the necessary resources, warning that further postponements could jeopardize the future of the historic complex.

Regional officials had not publicly responded to the request at the time of publication.
