Giorgio Rossi, Trieste’s councilor for culture and one of the city’s longest-serving public officials, has died at the age of 78, prompting tributes from regional and local institutions.
Rossi, who was born in Umag in 1947, played a prominent role in Trieste’s political and civic life for decades. Widely regarded as the longtime close collaborator of Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, he combined a career in the construction sector, which began in 1968, with an enduring commitment to public service.
Throughout his years in office, Rossi became known for his unwavering support of culture, championing museums, exhibitions, festivals and artistic initiatives that helped shape Trieste’s cultural identity. His commitment to making culture accessible and central to civic life earned him the respect of institutions and the city’s cultural community alike.
In a statement, Friuli Venezia Giulia Governor Massimiliano Fedriga described Rossi as “a passionate public administrator and a point of reference for the community,” saying that his death represents a significant loss for both the city of Trieste and the wider region.
Fedriga also extended condolences on behalf of the regional government to Rossi’s family, friends and the Municipality of Trieste, praising his contribution to the cultural and social development of the territory throughout his years in public office.
