Work Begins on Former Casarsa–Pinzano Railway for New Regional Cycle Route

Maintenance work is underway along the former Casarsa–Pinzano railway as Friuli Venezia Giulia moves forward with plans to convert the disused rail corridor into the future FVG6 regional cycling route.

Regional Infrastructure Councillor Cristina Amirante said the current operations represent the first phase of a broader project aimed at transforming the abandoned railway into a cycling connection linking the Pordenone plain with the foothills, expanding the region’s network of cycle paths.

The work, coordinated by FVG Strade, includes mowing vegetation, clearing overgrowth and maintaining the former railway bed. Regional officials said these preliminary measures are intended to preserve the existing infrastructure while preparing the route for subsequent design and construction phases.

Crews are expected to complete mowing and clearing between Via Cavour and Via Maniago by the end of the week. Maintenance has also been scheduled for the following section, extending from Via Maniago to the UD1 regional road. That portion is expected to take longer because large trees have grown along the abandoned railway over the years.

According to FVG Strade, work on the second section is expected to begin within the next two to three weeks, depending on the availability of specialized equipment currently assigned to other regional construction projects. Similar maintenance activities are also planned for the section of the former railway that passes through the urban area of Spilimbergo.

Regional officials said the long-term goal is to repurpose disused infrastructure for sustainable transportation, creating new cycling corridors that support both everyday mobility and cycle tourism. Once completed, the FVG6 route is expected to become part of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s broader strategy to expand its regional cycling network.
