As the historic Teatro Verdi prepares for an ambitious international tour and the restoration of its landmark home, the opera house is expanding its summer program with two open-air performances that bridge classical music, dance and film scores.

The events, part of the theater’s broader summer season, reflect an effort to reach audiences beyond traditional opera while maintaining a strong artistic presence in Trieste.

On July 18, Piazza Verdi will host “Festa,” a free tribute to the late Italian composer and conductor Ezio Bosso. The performance combines Bosso’s music and writings with the poetry of Emily Dickinson, bringing together actors, singers, dancers and chamber musicians in a multidisciplinary production.

The evening features choreography by Ambra Cadelli for GeA Danza, alongside performances by actress and mezzo-soprano Giulia Diomede, actor Giacomo Segulia, poet Paolo Caianiello and dancer Anna Somma. The chamber ensemble includes pianists Daniele Bonini and Dorian Dionisi, violinists Stefano Furini and Diana Mustea, violist Laura Menegozzo, cellist Andrea Di Corato, double bassist Danilo Sisto, flutist Giorgio Di Giorgi, horn player Chiara Bosco and trombonist Domenico Lazzaroni.

The performance, scheduled for 9 p.m., is free to the public.

Four days later, on July 22, the focus shifts to the Courtyard of the Militia at San Giusto Castle, where the Orchestra of the Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste, conducted by Gioele Muglialdo, will present the “Gala John Williams.”

The concert celebrates the celebrated American film composer through orchestral suites and themes from some of cinema’s best-known soundtracks, including E.T.Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s StoneRaiders of the Lost ArkThe Lost World: Jurassic ParkSchindler’s ListSuperman and Star Wars.

The performance begins at 9:15 p.m. Tickets are priced at €30, with a reduced €11 admission for audience members under 34.

The concerts come at a busy moment for the Verdi Theatre. Following a season marked by strong audience attendance and artistic success, the institution is preparing to embark on an international tour to Vietnam, where it will stage La Traviatain the 2024 production directed by Arnaud Bernard, under the baton of conductor Vanessa Benelli Mosell. The tour is part of a broader effort to strengthen cultural exchanges and promote Italian opera abroad.

The theater is also continuing its “Note d’Estate in Città” series and preparing a performance in Piran, Slovenia, on Aug. 2, where its orchestra will take part in celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of the monument to composer Giuseppe Tartini in the town’s main square.

Together, the summer performances highlight the Verdi Theatre’s strategy of pairing its traditional operatic repertoire with accessible outdoor events that connect classical music with literature, dance and the enduring appeal of film music.
