Civil Protection authorities in Friuli Venezia Giulia have issued a yellow weather alert for thunderstorms and strong winds across much of the region, warning of locally intense rainfall and possible disruptions from the morning of Sept. 9 through 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

According to the regional forecast, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop from Wednesday afternoon, becoming more widespread and intense as the day progresses. Coastal areas face the greatest risk of severe storms, with heavy downpours and strong wind gusts.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further on Thursday, when abundant to intense rainfall is forecast, particularly during the first half of the day. Authorities said storms affecting the plains and coastal zones could become locally very intense.

Areas under alert

The yellow alert applies to the regional warning zones FVG-A, FVG-C and FVG-D. Officials have identified an ordinary level of hydrogeological risk associated with thunderstorms in all three areas, while zones C and D are also subject to broader hydrogeological concerns. No alert has been issued for FVG-B.

The regional operational phase has been raised to a state of heightened attention.

Potential impacts

Civil Protection warned that the expected weather could lead to localized flooding along minor waterways and urban drainage systems, slope instability, road disruptions and hazardous conditions caused by strong wind gusts during thunderstorms.

Authorities urged municipalities to activate the procedures under the yellow alert protocol and advised residents to exercise particular caution in campsites and at outdoor events. The Regional Functional Center said it will continue monitoring the situation and may update the alert if forecasts change.
