A sprint triathlon will take place in Lignano Sabbiadoro on Saturday, April 25, serving as a test event ahead of the European Youth Olympic Festival scheduled for the coastal town in the summer of 2027.
The race, the ninth edition of the Triathlon Sprint Rank Gold, is organized by Triathlon Lignano ASD and dedicated to the memory of Renzo Ardito. It is intended to provide an operational rehearsal for sports infrastructure, logistics, and race management in advance of the XIX Summer EYOF, which will be held in Lignano from July 24 to August 1, 2027.
The event will be formally presented on Saturday, April 18, at 12 p.m. at Hotel President in Lignano Riviera. Among those expected to attend is Giorgio Brandolin, president of the EYOF 2027 executive committee.
Organizers say the competition will allow local authorities and sporting bodies to evaluate the readiness of the venue, particularly in terms of athlete flow, course layout, and coordination between sea, road, and urban segments of the race.
The sprint triathlon will follow the standard format of swimming, cycling, and running.
The swimming segment, a 750-meter course, will begin at 10 a.m. from the Bella Italia EFA Village beach. Athletes will complete a rectangular circuit in the Adriatic Sea before exiting the water and transitioning to the bike stage along Lungomare Kechler.
The cycling portion covers 21.5 kilometers, consisting of five laps on a 4.3-kilometer urban circuit through parts of the town. The run will follow a 5-kilometer course made up of two and a half laps on a 2-kilometer route, with the finish line located in Piazzale Marcello D’Olivo.
The sprint format is commonly used in elite and youth competitions for its compact structure and fast pace, making it suitable for testing both athlete performance and event logistics in a controlled environment.
The EYOF, organized under the European Olympic Committees, is one of the main multi-sport events for young athletes in Europe. The 2027 summer edition in Lignano is expected to bring together competitors from across the continent, with triathlon among the disciplines scheduled.
Local organizers view the April 25 event as part of a broader preparation process that includes infrastructure upgrades, coordination with emergency services, and refinement of race-day operations.
