Interview: Sergio Emidio Bini, FVG Councilor for Economic Development and Tourism

The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has approved a measure to ensure the continued operation of the thermal baths in Arta Terme, in the mountain area of Friuli Venezia Giullia, following the planned end of the current management on April 12.

The decision, announced in Trieste on April 10, authorizes a transitional arrangement designed to maintain services at the facility, which is owned by the local municipality. Under the plan, regional authorities aim to reopen and stabilize operations at the spa in a short timeframe.

Sergio Emidio Bini, the regional councillor for productive activities and tourism in the Sergio Emidio Bini, described the thermal complex as a strategic asset for both the mountain area and the wider tourism system of the region. He said the intervention is intended to ensure continuity of services while laying the groundwork for a more structured and sustainable relaunch of the facility.

According to the regional government, management of the baths will be entrusted to PromoTurismoFVG, the regional tourism promotion agency. The arrangement will be formalized through an agreement involving the Region, the Municipality of Arta Terme, and the agency, and will include a lease of the business branch from the local authority. The transition also foresees the transfer of staff currently employed at the site.

Officials said the objective is to avoid any interruption in services, including therapeutic treatments provided in cooperation with the regional health system. Administrative procedures are already underway to secure the necessary authorizations and accreditations for the new operator.

The regional administration framed the operation as a coordinated effort involving multiple departments, including health services and economic development, with the goal of ensuring a smooth transition in both operational and regulatory terms.

In parallel, authorities said a broader industrial plan will be developed to assess the economic and employment structure of the facility and to improve its overall efficiency. The aim, according to the regional government, is to strengthen the spa’s role in attracting visitors and extending the tourism season in the mountain area.

The initiative reflects a wider regional strategy to invest in thermal tourism as a way to diversify seasonal flows and support economic development in inland areas. Officials said the redevelopment of the Arta Terme facility is intended to contribute to that long-term objective, in coordination with local institutions.
