The recent decisions by the municipal government of Monfalcone regarding the use of public spaces for collective Muslim prayer have drawn criticism from regional opposition leaders, who warn that the issue risks escalating social tensions.
Diego Moretti, the head of the Democratic Party in the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional council, called the situation “wrong and dangerous,” arguing that it contributes to a climate in the city that is “increasingly toxic, divided, and unlivable.”
Moretti cited a ruling by Italy’s Council of State in a related case with the Darus Salam cultural center, which affirmed that the right to collective prayer is protected under the Constitution and cannot be obstructed.
In his statement, Moretti urged the Monfalcone administration to take responsibility, update the municipal plan, and work with the local Muslim community to designate a dedicated space for worship. He criticized the city’s approach of shifting the issue to neighboring municipalities, warning that such actions could further complicate relations and heighten tensions.
The Monfalcone city government has not issued an official response to the criticism.
