The Venice International Film Festival, the world’s oldest cinematic showcase, is set to return to the Lido from August 27 to September 6 for its 82nd edition, organizers announced on Tuesday.
The 2025 program was unveiled by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, president of the Biennale di Venezia, and festival director Alberto Barbera. This year’s main competition will feature 21 films, five of which are Italian, all competing for the coveted Golden Lion for best film.
Hollywood is expected to make a strong appearance, with actress Julia Roberts attending the festival for the first time. Roberts stars in After the Hunt, a psychological thriller produced by Amazon and directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino.
British actor Jude Law will also walk the red carpet, portraying Russian President Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin, a new film by French director Olivier Assayas.
Other high-profile entries in competition include Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, and Jay Kelly directed by Noah Baumbach.
The festival will open with La grazia by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, signaling a strong presence of auteur-driven cinema in this year’s selection.
The Venice International Film Festival, founded in 1932, continues to serve as a prominent platform for global filmmakers and remains a key event in the lead-up to the awards season.
