Miramare Castle joins the energy saving and sustainable initiative and turns off its lights this evening, 26 March.

“M’illumino di meno” ( literally: I illuminate myself less) initiative presented by Comune di Trieste invites everyone to turn their lights off this Friday evening.

This initiative is a symbolic gesture that does good for the planet and its inhabitants. The initiative is aimed at increasing energy saving and sustainable mobility awareness by calling to mind simple daily actions that can make a difference, both at home and at the workplace.

Not only Trieste, but the rest of Italy will take part and have the lights turned off in pizzas and on monuments.

Here are ten rules for energy saving (courtesy of Comune di Trieste’s Facebook page)

  1. Turn the lights off when not needed
  2. Turn off electrical appliances and do not leave them on stand-by
  3. Defrost the fridge frequently
  4. Cover pots when boiling water, and make sure the flame is not wider than the base of the pot
  5. When too hot, turn down the heat instead of opening windows
  6. Reduce draughts coming from frames filling the latter with materials that do not allow air to pass through
  7. Use curtains in front of windows, frames and external doors so as to create an air space
  8. Do not leave curtains closed in front of radiators
Insert isolating and reflecting films between external walls and radiators
  9. Use the car as little as possible and don’t forget to carpool. Use a bike to move around the city
  10. Choose public means of transport
