Trieste celebrated San Giusto, its patron saint, today, Tuesday, November 3, with a solemn Mass at the Cathedral of San Giusto, presided over by Bishop Enrico Trevisi.
In his homily, Trevisi reflected on the martyr’s unwavering faith, describing it as an example that challenges believers to live with greater courage and devotion.
“His faith makes mine pale in comparison,” the bishop said, expressing the hope that he, too, might be able to give his life for the Lord and for love, without hesitation or wavering.
Drawing on the writings of St. Augustine and the Gospel of John, Trevisi emphasized that the true measure of a person’s life lies in how much they have loved and cared for others.
“We will take nothing with us beyond what we have given in love and how we have cared for one another,” he said.
The bishop also cited Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas, highlighting the importance of compassion and mutual care as measures of a society’s humanity.
“The quality of a civilization is measured not by the power of its means, but by the care it offers,” the papal text states.
On the feast of its patron saint, Trieste was invited to reflect not only on its religious traditions, but also on the values of solidarity, generosity and responsibility toward others.
