The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government will increase fuel subsidies from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, raising discounts on gasoline and diesel to the highest level permitted under Italian law in an effort to offset rising pump prices.
The measure, approved by the regional executive, adds 5 euro cents per liter to the existing subsidy across the region. Officials said the program is funded entirely with regional resources, bringing total spending on fuel discounts to nearly €70 million.
The subsidy varies by three geographic zones, with the largest discounts reserved for border and disadvantaged areas.
| Area | Gasoline | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Area 0 (border and disadvantaged zones) | 39¢/L | 30¢/L |
| Area 1 | 29¢/L | 20¢/L |
| Area 2 (rest of the region) | 22¢/L | 16¢/L |
Owners of hybrid vehicles will continue to receive an additional 5-cent-per-liter discount in all three areas, bringing the maximum subsidy in Area 0 to 44 cents per liter for gasoline and 35 cents for diesel.
Regional Environment and Energy Councillor Fabio Scoccimarro said the increase responds to higher fuel prices driven by international market conditions, which fall outside the region’s direct control. He said the government was using the tools available to reduce the impact of rising transportation costs on households.
Finance Councilor Barbara Zilli said the region had allocated an additional €2.6 million for the final months of the year, citing the strength of the regional budget as enabling the expanded support.
The previous subsidy scheme, introduced in June, expires on Sept. 30. The new discounts will take effect the following day and remain in force until the end of 2026.
