Twenty-three performances, from piano legends to Cuban brass, will unfold across theaters, museums and historic venues from October through May
Nearly a century after its founding, the Società dei Concerti di Trieste is entering its 95th season with an ambitious program that reflects both the city’s musical heritage and its growing international cultural profile. The 2026–27 season, unveiled Thursday, will feature 23 performances across four concert series, bringing acclaimed soloists, orchestras and vocal ensembles to venues throughout Trieste from October to May.
The announcement comes on the heels of a successful edition of the Festival di Trieste – Il Faro della Musica, which concluded earlier this month after attracting about 5,000 attendees. The 10-day festival presented more than 20 events with 195 artists and drew visitors from across Italy as well as Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Britain and the United States.
At the heart of the new season is an 11-concert subscription series at Teatro Verdi, where internationally recognized performers will appear every Monday evening beginning Nov. 23. Opening the season is Russian pianist Grygorij Sokolov, widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the classical repertoire. The lineup also includes violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, French cellist Gautier Capuçon, pianist Arcadi Volodos, British vocal ensemble VOCES8, and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe.
The programming extends well beyond traditional symphonic concerts. December will feature Handel’s monumental Saul, performed by the Orchestra Barocca e Coro Andrea Palladio, while January introduces horn player Sarah Willis and her Afro-Cuban ensemble Sarahbanda, blending classical performance with Cuban musical traditions. Later concerts explore Schubert’s lieder, Renaissance polyphony, chamber music and contemporary vocal repertoire.
Alongside the main season, three parallel series broaden the musical experience. The Concerti Gioiello Wunderkammerwill present early music performances in intimate settings such as the Sartorio Museum and the Lutheran Church, while La Società dei Concerti nei Musei Civici combines live music with historical storytelling through collaborations with Trieste’s civic museums. A separate Advent and Christmas series will offer three performances in churches and the Castello di Miramare during the holiday season.
Artistic director Marco Seco described the season as more than a sequence of performances, calling it an ongoing effort to create “a living space” where audiences and musicians meet through music spanning the Renaissance to contemporary composers.
The organization is also continuing its social inclusion initiative, IN Crescendo, now entering its third year. Developed with the Fondazione Monticolo & Foti, Aulòs Musicoterapia and ASD Calicanto, the program uses music therapy and concert attendance to support young people with cognitive disabilities. This edition marks a new phase in which participants from the first cohort are expected to attend concerts independently, emphasizing autonomy alongside artistic engagement.
