The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has approved an expanded €5.6 million investment to bring high-capacity wireless connectivity and digital services to cycle routes across the region’s inland areas, with the project scheduled to be completed by 2030.
The initiative, financed through the European Union’s 2021–2027 Regional Development Fund (FESR), will extend telecommunications infrastructure along at least 70 kilometers of regional cycling paths. Officials estimate that about 44,000 cyclists use these routes each year.
The project integrates the region’s existing ultra-broadband public network, developed under the Ermes program, with the Regional Cycle Network (ReCIR). Implementation has been entrusted to the regional technology company Insiel.
The upgraded infrastructure will serve cycling routes passing through four inland territories: Alta Carnia, the Friulian Dolomites, Canal del Ferro–Val Canale, and the Torre and Natisone Valleys.
According to regional officials, the fiber-based network will support a range of digital services, including interactive information totems, emergency communication devices, environmental and weather sensors, road surface monitoring, video surveillance, and dynamic traffic and lighting systems capable of adapting to real-time user presence.
The investment is part of a broader strategy to improve safety, accessibility, and digital services along cycling infrastructure while supporting the region’s growing slow-tourism sector, which emphasizes outdoor travel and environmentally sustainable mobility.
