Rail service along the Tarvisio–Udine line in Italy’s northeastern Friuli Venezia Giulia region will be suspended from Aug. 22 through Sept. 20 to allow scheduled maintenance on the railway infrastructure, regional officials announced Tuesday.

The closure, coordinated by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), will affect the entire passenger rail corridor between the Austrian border town of Tarvisio and Udine, a key route for commuters, residents and travelers heading to the Alpine region. During the interruption, railway operators will replace trains with bus services, while timetables will be adjusted to reflect cancellations and revised connections.

According to the regional government, passenger trains will not operate for the duration of the works. In the final week of the closure, from Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, only freight trains will be permitted to run during nighttime hours.

Cristina Amirante, the regional councilor for Infrastructure and Territory, said the maintenance had been planned well in advance and required coordination with Austrian rail authorities. Construction work on the section between the border and Villach will take place during the same period, making synchronized scheduling necessary.

Officials also said the timetable was designed to avoid overlapping closures with maintenance works on the Brenner rail corridor, another major Alpine crossing, in order to preserve freight and passenger connectivity across northern Italy and Austria.

Travelers are advised to consult the official information channels of RFI and their respective railway operators for updated bus schedules, revised departure times and service changes throughout the maintenance period.

The regional administration said it will monitor the replacement transport system and work with rail operators to minimize disruption during the month-long closure.
