Interview: Caterina De Gavardo, Trieste Councilor for Public Safety and Local Police
As the summer season gets underway, Trieste’s municipal police have increased patrols along the Barcola waterfront, a popular seaside destination that draws thousands of residents and visitors each year.
The enhanced operation, which runs from mid-June through mid-September, will deploy four officers daily across 12-hour daytime shifts. The initiative, now in its fourth consecutive year, aims to improve public safety, manage increased traffic and pedestrian activity, and ensure compliance with local regulations.
Speaking at a news conference in Barcola on Tuesday, city officials said the patrols would focus on road safety, public order and the prevention of disruptive behavior. Officers from the city’s Special Interventions Unit will monitor issues such as urban decay, unauthorized camping and other violations of municipal rules, while the Motorized Unit will oversee traffic conditions and enforcement of road regulations.
Authorities said the waterfront has already seen a rise in activity this season. Since May, police have recorded 10 traffic accidents in the area, including two involving injuries. Additional inspections targeting nightlife-related disturbances and commercial activities are also planned.
Officials said the increased presence is intended primarily as a preventive measure, helping to maintain a safe and orderly environment for residents, beach goers and tourists throughout the summer months.
