The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has approved a new feasibility plan for a cycling and pedestrian link that will connect Fogliano Redipuglia, Sagrado and Gradisca d’Isonzo, completing a key section of the FVG 5 Isonzo cycle route.

The project, valued at more than €2.3 million, includes the conversion of a disused railway bridge over the Isonzo River into a dedicated cycling and pedestrian crossing. Regional officials said the intervention is intended to address one of the main gaps in the region’s cycling network.

At present, cyclists and pedestrians crossing the Isonzo between Fogliano Redipuglia, Sagrado and Gradisca d’Isonzo must use the bridge on Regional Road 305, sharing space with motorized traffic or relying on narrow sidewalks.

According to regional authorities, the new crossing is expected to improve safety and continuity along the FVG 5 route, one of the region’s principal cycling corridors. The route stretches from the mouth of the Isonzo River to Gorizia and connects with Slovenia’s cycling network.

The project forms part of a broader effort to complete the FVG 5 cycleway and expand the cycling infrastructure of the Isontino area. Once completed, it will contribute to a continuous and protected route of roughly 20 kilometers linking the Isonzo estuary with Gradisca d’Isonzo, Gorizia and Cormons.

The new section will extend approximately 1.29 kilometers and is designed to connect currently fragmented paths, improving access to nearby towns and the railway station in Sagrado.

Funding for the project comes from regional resources and the 2021–2027 European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) program. Regional officials say the investment is aimed at supporting sustainable mobility, improving connections with rail transport and enhancing access to an area known for its natural, historical and cultural attractions.
