Regional authorities in Friuli Venezia Giulia convened an urgent meeting in Tolmezzo on Tuesday to address repeated disruptions in local public transportation affecting mountain communities.

Cristina Amirante, the regional councilor for Infrastructure and Territory, described the session as “a serious and constructive discussion,” emphasizing cooperation among local officials and transport operators. “The shared goal is to ensure continuity and quality of service, even in the context of a significant personnel shortage,” she said.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Comunità di Montagna della Carnia, included representatives from the regional transport consortium Tpl Fvg Scarl, its affiliate Arriva Udine Spa, and the mayors of the Carnia, Val Degano, Canal del Ferro, and Valli del Natisone areas.

Local officials outlined specific service gaps, while transport operators attributed the disruptions primarily to a shortage of drivers, compounded by recent illness-related absences and difficulties recruiting new staff.

Amirante said the discussion produced a commitment from the operators to implement corrective measures within the constraints of current staffing. Plans include strengthening service monitoring and launching a comprehensive review of routes and schedules in consultation with local communities, aiming to align service levels with actual demand while complying with regional contract requirements.

“The region’s objective is to identify practical and sustainable solutions,” Amirante said. “Public transport is a cornerstone of citizenship and territorial cohesion. We will continue to closely monitor the situation to protect the public interest and the rights of users.”
