A sunny Saturday in Friuli Venezia Giulia’s capital, Trieste, drew crowds of locals to the Barcola waterfront, where families, runners and dog walkers made the most of a rare spell of winter warmth. With temperatures hovering around 7 degrees Celsius, the city’s seafront took on the feel of an early spring afternoon rather than the middle of January.
But the gentle calm was not expected to last. By Sunday, forecasters warned, temperatures would drop sharply as the Bora — Trieste’s famously fierce northeast wind — swept in from the Karst plateau, reminding residents that winter still holds a firm grip on the Adriatic port.
