Muggia, the town just south of Trieste will inaugurate its holiday season on Wednesday, Dec. 3, with the lighting of its Christmas tree in Piazza Marconi. The ceremony, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., will also introduce new light installations featuring sacred imagery projected onto the façade of the town’s Duomo, an initiative supported by Eni.
The tree lighting marks the start of a monthlong series of cultural events, concerts, markets and family activities organized throughout Muggia’s squares, museums and theaters.
On Dec. 5, the Orchestra a Fiati Città di Muggia will perform in Piazza Marconi. The following morning, the Museo Carà will host the presentation of Restituzioni, a new catalog documenting the municipality’s art collection, along with recently received donations from the Molesi and Montebugnoli families. Later that day, the Banda Ongia will present a roaming concert through the town’s narrow streets in honor of San Nicolò.
The weekend of Dec. 7–8 will bring a craft and vintage market to Piazza G. Galilei, a staging of The Importance of Being Earnest at Teatro Verdi, and additional musical entertainment in Piazza Marconi. Teatro Verdi will also host the annual Concert for the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8, performed by the Orchestra da Camera del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The program continues with a literary presentation at Biblioteca Guglia on Dec. 11 and a concert by the Filarmonica di Santa Barbara on Dec. 13. A series of markets, children’s activities and musical performances will take place across Muggia on Dec. 14 and 15.
Additional holiday markets will return to Piazza G. Galilei on Dec. 20 and 21, accompanied by film screenings, popular music concerts and a dialect theater performance at Teatro Verdi. Activities extend past Christmas with family animation cinema on Dec. 30, children’s music workshops on Jan. 3 at Biblioteca Guglia, and concerts at the Museo Carà and Teatro Verdi on Jan. 4 and 6.
Most events are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated.
The Ugo Carà Museum of Modern Art will observe special seasonal hours: Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m., and Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to noon. It will close on Dec. 8, 25 and Jan. 1, and operate on a reduced schedule the mornings of Dec. 26 and Jan. 6. The Civic Archaeological Museum will be open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
