From Sept. 16 to 22, Trieste will join thousands of cities across Europe in marking European Mobility Week, an annual initiative promoting sustainable urban transport. This year’s edition, themed “Mobility for All,” highlights mobility as a right rather than a privilege, aiming to ensure freedom of movement in ways that are sustainable, inclusive and safe.
The campaign, supported by local administrations, associations and residents, encourages a gradual shift toward active mobility, public transportation and other low-emission solutions. It has grown into a continent-wide effort, with millions of participants each year engaging in activities that promote healthier, more livable cities.
In Trieste, the program will unfold through a series of events beginning Saturday, Sept. 13, and continuing through Friday, Sept. 19, blending sports, education, cultural activities and community engagement.
Swimming for a Cause
The opening event, “NuoTiAmo nell’Oasi,” will take place on Sept. 13. Organized by the nonprofit Abbracciamoli Onlus, it is a non-competitive charity swim in support of pediatric hematology research. Three routes — ranging from 1.8 to 9.6 kilometers — will pass through the Miramare marine reserve, with proceeds donated to the Burlo Garofolo Children’s Hospital.
On the same day, A.S.D. 360 MTB will host an open day at the 3 Camini Bike Park, offering free mountain biking lessons for children and teenagers.
Sports and Inclusion
Beginning Monday, Sept. 15, schools and recreational centers will take part in “Sport & Mobilità,” a series of open days at the newly developed Trieste Campus. The facility is designed as a shared space for athletes, enthusiasts and para-athletes, providing opportunities to try tennis, basketball, pickleball and other activities.
Roller skating workshops led by the A.S.D. Roller University will also be offered for children at neighborhood recreation centers.
Environmental Awareness
On Sept. 17, families with young children will board an electric bus to Sottolongera for “Ortoliamo,” an activity combining gardening, reading and environmental education.
Later in the week, the Local Police will host “Sicurezza per tutti” (Safety for All), a public information day on road safety, while other events include guided walks through Trieste’s urban forests and storytelling sessions for children in city squares.
Focus on Public Transport
On Sept. 19, Trieste Trasporti, the city’s public transport company, will present its new electric bus in Piazza Unità d’Italia and showcase digital services such as onboard ticketing, on-demand transport and the MaaS FVG regional mobility app, which integrates buses, trains, bike sharing and ferries into a single platform. Free annual subscriptions to the city’s bike-sharing service, BiTS, will also be available.
That same day, the association inBUSclub will inaugurate “Trieste Elettrica,” a photography exhibition tracing the city’s history of trams, trolleybuses and electric buses, while the Ente di Decentramento Regionale will lead a guided walk along the Via della Pietra to the Roman quarry of Aurisina.
Evenings will feature cultural programming, including a comedy performance by Furian & Maxino at the Teatro Verdi and an orienteering activity for teenagers organized by the city’s youth project in collaboration with the Italian Alpine Club.
A Broader Goal
European Mobility Week’s 2025 theme underlines the idea that mobility should be accessible to everyone. Trieste’s program reflects this principle, combining athletic events, environmental initiatives and digital innovation to encourage citizens of all ages to rethink how they move through the city.
