The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has announced a €5 million allocation to acquire former railway infrastructure between Casarsa della Delizia and Pinzano al Tagliamento, as part of a broader plan to transform the disused line into a new cycling route.
The funding, included in the region’s summer budget adjustment, will be used to purchase abandoned stations and signal boxes along the route of the future FVG6 Tagliamento Cycleway. Officials say the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to enhance local tourism and promote sustainable mobility.
“The acquisition of these properties is essential to developing rest areas and boosting the value of local communities along the route,” said Cristina Amirante, regional councillor for Infrastructure and Territory. “This is not just an infrastructure project, but a real opportunity to revitalize the region.”
The FVG6 will follow the path of a former railway line that once connected towns across the Tagliamento River area. By converting the rail corridor into a cycling path, the region aims to link rural areas more effectively with tourist destinations, creating a network that supports both environmental goals and economic development.
The project has received broad support at the local level, with several municipalities expressing interest in participating in the redevelopment of the sites. The reuse of the old stations is expected to serve a variety of functions, including bike rest stops, local produce markets, and cultural hubs.
Construction on the cycleway is expected to proceed in stages, with the first segments scheduled for development later this year.
