In a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony held Monday at the Lina Marii Marinelli Municipal Library in Melara, local officials inaugurated five new breastfeeding stations now available across the city’s public libraries.

The initiative, supported by funding from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, includes dedicated spaces in the Tomizza Newspaper Library and other municipal library branches, designed to offer comfort and privacy to nursing mothers.

The event was introduced by Maurizio De Blasio, Trieste’s Councillor for Education and Family Policies, alongside library manager Serena Miniussi and pedagogical coordinator Marco Visotto. Also in attendance were national and regional representatives, including Member of Parliament Nicole Matteoni, Regional Councillor Claudio Giacomelli — who authored the budget amendment that secured the funding — as well as Roberto Cavallaro, President of Trieste’s Sixth District, and Daniele Mosetti, President of ATER, the regional public housing authority.

The initiative stems from a broader regional effort to create family-friendly environments in public institutions such as libraries and museums. According to Giacomelli, the amendment to the regional budget aimed to “promote inclusive spaces for early childhood and support parents in everyday situations.”

Library staff emphasized that the breastfeeding points are not only functional but also intended to promote a welcoming atmosphere for families. Each area includes comfortable seating, child-friendly furnishings, and informational resources on early childhood care.

“This is a small but significant step in making our public spaces more accessible and supportive of all families,” said De Blasio during the ceremony.

The city plans to evaluate the use of the stations over the coming months and consider expanding the initiative to other civic spaces depending on demand and community feedback.
