As part of the 2024–2025 opera and ballet season, the Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi is presenting a new staging of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, in co-production with the Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna. With its sharp wit, sweeping score, and philosophical undercurrents, the work continues to captivate audiences nearly seven decades after its premiere.
The Trieste production features Kevin Rhodes as maestro concertatore and conductor, with staging and choreography by Renato Zanella. Scenic design is by Mauro Tinti, costumes by Danilo Coppola, and direction is supported by assistant Oscar Cecchi. The chorus is led by Paolo Longo. The musical edition is provided by Boosey & Hawkes, represented in Italy by Casa Ricordi.
Performances are scheduled for June 13, 14, 15, 19, 21, and 22, with alternating casts.
The title role of Candide will be performed by Enrico Casari (June 13, 15, 21) and Marco Miglietta (June 14, 19, 22). Cunegonde will be portrayed by Tetiana Zhuravel and Francesca Benitez on alternating dates. Bruno Taddia and Valdis Jansons will share the multi-faceted roles of Voltaire, Dr. Pangloss, Martin, and Cacambo.
Other cast members include Madelyn Renée and Benedetta Mazzetto as The Old Lady; Felix Kemp and Michele Patti as Maximilian, the Captain, and Tsar Ivan; and David Astorga and Raffaele Feo as The Governor, Vanderdendur, and Ragotski. Aloisa Aisemberg and Eleonora Filipponi will alternate as Paquette. Saverio Pugliese performs a variety of supporting roles.
With this new production, the Teatro Verdi continues its commitment to combining classic works with contemporary staging, offering audiences both musical excellence and theatrical inventiveness.
