In a solemn and symbolic gesture underscoring the deep-rooted bond between the city and Italy’s national gendarmerie, the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, this morning conferred honorary citizenship on the Carabinieri corps during a session of the City Council.

The decision, approved unanimously by the council, was described as a tribute to the Carabinieri’s “high sense of duty, loyalty, and closeness to the community.” Mayor Dipiazza emphasized the enduring connection between Trieste and the military police force, calling it “an indissoluble bond.” The official commendation noted that the Carabinieri have long been “witnesses to a shared history” with the city.

Sitting beside the mayor during the ceremony was Army Corps General Maurizio Stefanizzi, the Interregional Commander of the Carabinieri Vittorio Veneto, who traveled from Padua for the occasion. General Stefanizzi oversees Carabinieri operations across four regions: Emilia-Romagna, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

He was joined by senior officers from various branches of the Carabinieri, including Brigadier General Gabriele Vitagliano, commander of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Legion, and Colonel Gianluca Migliozzi, head of the Trieste command.

The conferral of honorary citizenship is the latest expression of gratitude from the city toward an institution often seen not just as a security force, but as a moral pillar of Italian civil life.
