In a heartwarming display of courage and community spirit, 17-year-old Gabriele Facchettin was celebrated for his heroic actions on a sunny afternoon in Trieste. The young lifeguard assistant was recognized for saving a foreign tourist from drowning during his second day of work at the Bagno Ferroviario beach.

The ceremony took place in the Blue Lounge of the city hall, where Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel and City Councilor Stefano Vatta presented Facchettin with accolades for his bravery. Facchettin, accompanied by his proud parents, was honored with a bronze seal and a certificate signed by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, who was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.
Facchettin’s dramatic rescue occurred when he swiftly responded to an emergency involving a young foreigner who had capsized his canoe in the waters adjacent to the public beach. The incident, which could have turned tragic, was averted thanks to Facchettin’s quick thinking and efficient action.
Deputy Mayor Tonel praised Facchettin’s valor and dedication, stating, “It is gratifying to see young people like Gabriele, who are so capable and committed to their responsibilities. Trieste is frequented by many tourists, some of whom may not be accustomed to the sea. It’s reassuring to know that our community is protected by such competent individuals.”
City Councilor Vatta echoed this sentiment, expressing satisfaction at seeing a young person play a pivotal role in a life-saving event. The recognition ceremony underscored not only Facchettin’s exceptional bravery but also the importance of having well-trained and vigilant lifeguards on duty.
As Facchettin accepted his awards, the ceremony served as a reminder of the critical role that dedicated individuals play in ensuring the safety and well-being of both locals and visitors in coastal communities.
