Underneath the starlit skies of the “Muzio de Tommasini” Public Garden, Trieste residents are indulging in a cinematic treat this summer with the Casa del Cinema’s open-air extravaganza, aptly named “The Cinema Garden.” From June 24 to June 30, 2024, this cultural oasis nestled in the heart of the city center promises a week-long celebration of diverse cinema genres, from acclaimed art-house films to beloved classics and captivating animations.

Organized by the Casa del Cinema association, in collaboration with a network of local cultural bodies and renowned film festivals, including the Trieste Film Festival and ShorTS International Film Festival, “The Cinema Garden” showcases a curated lineup that caters to every cinephile’s taste. Noteworthy entries include recent cinematic triumphs, original language releases, and exclusive previews that have graced prestigious international festivals.

Kicking off the festivities on June 24 is a special presentation by the Trieste Film Festival, in partnership with DeutschZentrum Triest, featuring the German film “La sala professori – Das Lehrerzimmer” (2024), a poignant exploration of a young teacher’s turbulent debut in an unruly school environment, unveiled at the Berlinale and tipped for an Oscar nomination.

The program continues to enthrall audiences with a diverse array of offerings, such as the poignant project “I Passi della Memoria – Racconto per Immagini delle Pietre d’Inciampo” and a free screening of Taika Waititi’s critically acclaimed “Jojo Rabbit” on June 25, courtesy of La Cappella Underground.

Film aficionados can also look forward to Luca Guadagnino’s latest creation, “Challengers” (2024), on June 26, featuring Zendaya in a riveting narrative about redemption and rivalry in the world of professional tennis, portrayed in its original subtitled version.

Adding a musical touch to the cinematic soirée, Bonawentura – Teatro Miela presents “Note in caffè – Domani è ancora estate” on June 27, blending readings and melodic performances against the backdrop of the garden’s serene ambiance.

As the week progresses, anticipation builds for the ShorTS International Film Festival, opening with a special ceremony on June 28, where the prestigious Cinema of the Soul Award for 2024 will be bestowed upon filmmaker Simone Massi.

Not merely an entertainment venture, “The Cinema Garden” embodies a community effort supported by the Municipality of Trieste, the CRTrieste Foundation, and the Alberto and Kathleen Casali Charitable Foundation. It champions the “Cinema Revolution” initiative by the Ministry of Culture, offering discounted tickets for European and Italian films throughout the summer, fostering accessibility and cultural engagement.

Each evening, beginning at 9:00 PM, the garden transforms into a haven for film enthusiasts, accessible from Via Giulia/Largo Tomizza, welcoming patrons to savor cinematic excellence under the starry Trieste skies.
