Trieste Makes Historic Move as First Italian Port to Manage Rail Operations: Secures Safety Approval from ANSFISA
In a significant stride towards efficient logistics, the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority has achieved a notable feat, becoming the first Italian port to take charge of rail operations within its terminal. Following its impressive handling of over 12,000 trains in 2023 and managing 54% of container traffic via rail, the Authority has now received safety authorization for its rail facilities from ANSFISA (National Agency for Railway and Road Infrastructure Safety).
This approval marks the implementation of a meticulous safety coordination system, ensuring the secure oversight of all rail infrastructure processes and activities post a comprehensive risk analysis.
With this new responsibility, the Authority steps into a vital role traditionally occupied by a select few in Italy, notably RFI (Italian Rail Network). Collaborating closely with RFI, it aims to streamline ongoing rail development projects at the Giuliano terminal, including infrastructure enhancements for the Trieste Campo Marzio station.
Trieste’s achievement is not just a milestone for the port but also underscores its commitment to railway infrastructure. Since 2018, it has maintained a dedicated railway department, training staff and overseeing rail operations within the port area.
By establishing this internal unit, the Authority has positioned itself as a key coordinator of the port’s railway system, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and sustainable practices. This move not only enhances maneuver safety but also contributes significantly to the port’s performance in the intermodal sector.
