The City of Trieste awarded its Bronze Medal on Wednesday to violinist Pierpaolo Foti, recognizing the young musician’s growing international career and his role in promoting the city’s cultural identity abroad.
The honor was presented by Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel during a ceremony at City Hall’s Salotto Azzurro, attended by City Council President Francesco di Paola Panteca and Councilor Mirko Martini, who proposed the recognition.
Born in Trieste in 1997, Foti trained at conservatories in Trieste, Florence, Parma and Genoa before continuing his studies in several European capitals. While rooted in the classical tradition, he has become known for blending classical repertoire with cinematic, pop and contemporary influences, making it accessible to broader audiences. He also performs without a shoulder rest, reviving a 19th-century technique that produces a distinctive, resonant sound.
Foti drew widespread attention during last year’s Barcolana regatta with a performance in Piazza Unità d’Italia at the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional stand. He also serves as an ambassador for the region’s “Io sono Friuli Venezia Giulia” campaign.
Presenting the award, Tonel praised Foti’s “unique and magnetic style” and said his success reflects the talent and creativity of the region. Panteca noted the violinist’s ability to move audiences regardless of their musical background, while Martini described his career as an inspiration for younger generations.
Following the presentation, Foti performed in the Salotto Azzurro before thanking the city for what he called “a great honor and a great responsibility.”
“I will carry it forward with humility and all the energy I have,” he said. “I will do everything I can to live up to it.”
