Friuli Venezia Giulia is soon to announce the state emergency caused my the drought alarm that hit Italy, as announced by the regional government last week.

The agricultural sector in our region, as well as in other regions of Italy, is in great trouble due to the lack of rain and the drought-hit Tagliamento river.

“The situation is only going to get worse as the next few months are forecast to be hot and dry,” said  Fulvio Stel, FVG’s chief meteorologist.

“This drought is unique in history due to the combination of two anomalies – the lack of rain, on top of the elevated temperature, which is directly linked to climate change,” he continued.

“If before we used to get consistent rainfall over 10 months, in more recent years it has come in two or three heavy bursts over a shorter period of time, turning the river into a torrent,” said Stel.

FVG’s president Massimiliano Fedriga said the region is ready to announce the state of emergency in the next couple of weeks if the situation doesn’t get better.
