A major exhibition dedicated to the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and New York’s downtown cultural scene of the late 1970s and 1980s will open at Casa Cavazzini in Udine on Dec. 16, 2026, and run through May 2, 2027.

Titled Jean Michel Basquiat & NEW YORK SUPERSTARS, the exhibition is organized by PromoTurismoFVG in collaboration with the City of Udine and Mondomostre. It is curated by Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer, two internationally recognized specialists on Basquiat and Keith Haring.

The exhibition will explore one of the most influential periods in contemporary art, highlighting the creative energy of New York’s downtown scene, where visual art, graffiti, music, fashion and popular culture converged. Alongside works by Basquiat, the show will feature pieces by Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel, Kenny Scharf and Andy Warhol.

Regional tourism official Sergio Emidio Bini said the exhibition builds on the success of Impressionism and Modernity, currently on view at Casa Cavazzini, which has attracted nearly 60,000 visitors since opening in January. He said the new exhibition reflects the region’s strategy of using major cultural events to strengthen tourism and promote Friuli Venezia Giulia internationally.

Advance ticket sales are scheduled to begin in mid-September.

Before the Basquiat exhibition opens, visitors can still see Impressionism and Modernity: Masterpieces from the Kunst Museum Winterthur at Casa Cavazzini through Aug. 30.
