A guided walk through the Civic Botanical Garden will take place on Sunday, June 21, beginning at 10 a.m. at the garden’s entrance on Via Carlo de Marchesetti 2. Admission and participation are free.
The event will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the garden as it exists today while tracing its historical development over more than a century.
The story of the Botanical Garden dates back to April 5, 1878, when Muzio de Tommasini, who founded the institution alongside Bartolomeo Biasoletto on Chiadino Hill, appealed to the municipality to recognize the garden as a scientific institution serving the public good. His request was not accepted at the time.
It was not until 1903, through the efforts of municipal councilor Felice Venezian, that the Botanical Garden was incorporated into the city’s network of scientific museums. On Nov. 6 of that year, it became part of the Civic Scientific Museums under the direction of the Natural History Museum and its curator, Carlo Marchesetti.
Marchesetti subsequently oversaw a reorganization of the garden’s flowerbeds and collections. In 1906, he documented the work carried out during the previous three years in a report that provides a snapshot of the garden’s early transformation.
Organizers say the walk will revisit these developments, allowing participants to compare the site’s current appearance with the vision and changes that shaped it more than a century ago.
