Regional officials are seeking a swift conclusion to the process that will determine the future management of Trieste’s integrated water service, emphasizing the need for clarity, investment and job security for more than 1,000 workers connected to the sector.
Speaking before a municipal commission on Monday, Fabio Scoccimarro, the regional councilor for the environment, said the priority is to complete the tender process within the established timeline to avoid extensions, legal disputes and uncertainty.
“The future of the service should not be imposed from above,” Scoccimarro said, adding that decisions should be made through the institutional bodies responsible for overseeing the sector, beginning with the assemblies of Ausir, the regional authority that coordinates water services.
Scoccimarro also highlighted the need for significant investment in the network. Trieste’s geography, with elevation changes approaching 400 meters, requires a complex water management system and substantial financial resources to maintain and improve service standards, he said.
The councilor stressed the importance of protecting employment throughout the transition, noting that workers and their families remain a key consideration in the process.
Looking ahead, Scoccimarro reiterated the region’s support for greater cooperation among utility providers and the possible creation of a larger multiutility company. However, he said decisions on future management models, including potential in-house arrangements, should be evaluated by Ausir and local authorities on technical and economic grounds.
The regional government, he said, will continue to monitor the process and encourage Ausir’s leadership to provide timely technical and legal clarification as the tender moves forward.
