Thousands of music fans are expected to gather at Gorizia’s Amedeo Duca d’Aosta Airport on Sunday evening for a concert by Italian singer-songwriter Cesare Cremonini, an event that will serve as the inaugural large-scale test of a newly redeveloped venue designed to host major live performances.

The concert, scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., is expected to attract approximately 25,000 spectators, making it one of the largest music events ever held in the area. Organizers have described the performance as a “date zero” event, effectively serving as a trial run for the site’s future use as a destination for concerts and other large gatherings.

The airport grounds have undergone a significant transformation in recent years, supported by a regional investment of €3 million aimed at adapting the area for large-scale public events. Officials say the venue could eventually accommodate as many as 50,000 people, a capacity unmatched elsewhere in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

The project reflects a broader effort by regional authorities to expand the role of live entertainment in attracting visitors to northeastern Italy. This year’s concert calendar includes performances across several cities, including Gorizia, Udine and the seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro.

At a presentation of the event in Trieste on Thursday, tourism officials highlighted the growing economic significance of large concerts, noting their impact on hotels, restaurants, transportation providers and other businesses linked to tourism and entertainment.

For Gorizia, the concert arrives during a period of heightened visibility. Together with neighboring Nova Gorica in Slovenia, the city is serving as the European Capital of Culture 2025, drawing increased attention from visitors and event organizers alike.

Preparations for Sunday’s concert have involved coordination among regional authorities, the Municipality of Gorizia and private-sector partners responsible for logistics, infrastructure and safety measures. Officials said the venue is ready for final testing ahead of the performance.

As concertgoers prepare to arrive, organizers view the event as more than a single evening of music. Its success could determine whether the former airport site becomes a permanent fixture on Italy’s summer concert circuit, bringing internationally known performers to a region better known for its borderland history, wine country and Adriatic coastline than for hosting mass entertainment events.

For one night at least, the spotlight will be on Gorizia, as thousands gather under the open sky for the first major concert in what organizers hope will become a new chapter for the venue.
