Friuli Venezia Giulia Swelters as Early Heatwave Grips Italy

As Italy confronts one of its earliest heatwaves in recent memory, the northeastern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is once again finding itself on the climate front line. On Wednesday, Italy’s Health Ministry is maintaining heat alerts across much of the country after temperatures surged well above seasonal averages, bringing midsummer conditions to cities from Rome to Trieste.

Forecasts across northern Italy have pushed toward 35°C this week as a North African anticyclone continues to drive unusually warm air across the peninsula. The prolonged heat, arriving before June has even begun, has raised concerns among health officials and climate experts alike.

The unusually early heatwave reflects a broader trend increasingly visible across Italy and southern Europe. Meteorologists have noted that heat events are arriving earlier in the calendar year and lasting longer than in previous decades, a phenomenon scientists largely attribute to climate change.

Beyond the cities, the effects are already being felt across Friuli Venezia Giulia’s agricultural landscape. Vineyard owners in the Collio and Colli Orientali wine regions are closely monitoring soil conditions and grape development, aware that prolonged heat stress in late spring can alter harvest schedules and potentially affect production later in the season.

Regional authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and pay particular attention to elderly relatives and neighbors. A yellow weather alert across the region is in place from midday Wednesday to midday Thursday, 28 May.
